Reformation Journal publishes serious Protestant theology in the Reformed tradition. While not operating under a formal blind peer-review process, submissions are expected to demonstrate the clarity of argument, theological competence, and responsible use of sources ordinarily associated with academic theological journals.
We welcome submissions from pastors, theologians, scholars, and informed lay writers whose work reflects doctrinal clarity, careful argumentation, and respect for the historic Christian tradition.
What We Publish
Reformation Journal accepts the following types of submissions:
Journal Articles
Longform theological essays engaging Scripture, doctrine, history, or theological method.
Typical length: 3,000–7,000 words
Columns (“From the Pew”)
Shorter essays applying theology to church life, pastoral concerns, or contemporary issues.
Typical length: 1,200–2,500 words
Reviews
Critical reviews or review essays engaging theological literature.
Typical length: 800–2,000 words
Theological Scope
Submissions should fall within one or more theological disciplines, including:
- Systematic Theology (e.g., soteriology, ecclesiology, Christology)
- Biblical Studies (OT, NT, biblical theology, hermeneutics)
- Historical Theology
- Confessional & Reformed Theology
- Ethics & Public Theology
Theological discipline describes subject matter, not article format. A column may address ecclesiology without being a formal journal article.
Doctrinal Orientation
Reformation Journal operates within the historic Protestant and Reformed tradition.
Submissions must affirm:
- The authority and sufficiency of Holy Scripture
- Trinitarian orthodoxy
- Justification by faith alone
- The historic Reformed confessions
- A high view of the visible church
We do not publish material advocating progressive Christianity, theological liberalism, egalitarian theology, or non-Protestant sacramental systems.
Standards of Writing
Submissions should demonstrate:
- A clear thesis and coherent argument
- Responsible engagement with opposing views
- Appropriate citation of primary and secondary sources
- A tone marked by seriousness and charity
Footnotes are strongly preferred.
Chicago, Turabian, or SBL citation styles are acceptable.
Previously Published Work
Reformation Journal is willing to consider republication of serious theological work, provided that:
- The author retains republication rights
- Prior publication permits republication without restriction
- The piece undergoes the same editorial review as original submissions
Republished articles must clearly note:
“This article was previously published at [publication name] and is republished here with permission.”
Reformation Journal does not republish material without explicit authorization.

Our Aim
Reformation Journal exists to cultivate theological seriousness in service of the church.
We seek writing that honors Scripture, engages the tradition responsibly, and advances understanding rather than outrage.
